Teresa of Calcutta:
A Personal Memoir
by José
Luis González-Balado

Calcutta. This revised and updated edition recalls the important

Joseph Elmer Cardinal Ritter:
His Life and Times
By: Nicholas A. Schneider
Foreword by: Archbishop Justin Rigali
Joseph Ritter was one of the most important and forward-thinking
prelates of the Church in North America during the 20th century. He
served as ordinary for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and then as
"Cardinal" Ritter in St. Louis for twenty years until his death in 1967.
Through his efforts, the entire archdiocesan school system was
desegregated, and he was the first bishop to send priests to Latin
America as missionaries. This biography provides us with the first
serious account of his life and accomplishments. It is written by a
priest who knew him firsthand and ministered under his guidance. Readers
will find this historical account of such a great man truly inspiring.

The Greatest Gift
The Courageous Life and Martyrdom of Sister
Dorothy Stang
by Binka Le Breton
In 1966, Sister Dorothy Stang went to Brazil as a missionary, and in 1982
she moved to a small town in the Amazon to work with an organization to
protect poor farmers and their land from loggers and land-developers who
stop at nothing—including murder—in pursuit of profits. After testifying at
a government panel investigating illegal incursions into protected areas,
Sister Dorothy was denounced as a “terrorist” by powerful companies and
began receiving death threats. Refusing to be intimidated, she continued her
work—until two gunmen shot her six times on a rural Amazon road.
THE GREATEST GIFT is the first biography of this extraordinary woman and her
mission. Written by a mainstream journalist who has spent many years in
Brazil, it exposes the entrenched collusion between government officials and
commercial interests and celebrates the profound courage of Sister Dorothy
and others fighting to protect the Amazon jungles and the people eking out a
life there.
Inspired by deep religious conviction, Dorothy Stang gave of herself
generously. A book that will resonate with readers of Sister Helen Prejean’s
Dead Man Walking, THE GREATEST GIFT presents not only the story of
Sister Dorothy’s tragic death, but the powerful and beautiful lessons of her
life. Hardcover. (Item #88104) $21.95 |

The End and the Beginning: Pope
John Paul II- The Victory of Freedom, The Last Years, The Legacy
by George Weigel
Evidently, 1,000 pages were not enough space to adequately survey
the life of Pope John Paul II in Weigel’s biography, Witness to Hope
(1999). Although the three sections in this work are designed to
supplement that earlier one, only the first takes a thematic
approach. The theme explored is communism and covers four decades of
John Paul’s life, before and during his papacy. The pope’s struggle
against communism was covered sporadically in Witness but without as
much detail or behind-the-scenes glimpses as there are here. The
last event recorded in the earlier book was the Great Jubilee of
2000, five years before the pontiff’s death. The final years of John
Paul’s papacy are covered in the second section, while the third is
strictly reflective. The key question here is, What will Pope John
Paul II be remembered for? Weigel explores numerous angles to his
legacy, including his personal character and a strong spirit of
ecumenism. 590 pages (Item #85130) $32.50 |

My Life with Karol: My Forty-Year Friendship with the Man Who Became Pope
by Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz
This intimate, affectionate portrait of Pope
John Paul II by his longtime secretary and
confidant reveals fascinating new details
about the opinions, hopes, fears, and
dramatic life of this public man.
“I had accompanied him for almost forty
years: twelve in Kraków and then
twenty-seven in Rome. I was always with him,
always at his side. Now, in the moment of
death, he’d gone on alone. . . .And now? Who
is accompanying him on the other side?”
—From A Life with KarolCardinal
Stanislaw Dziwisz worked side by side with
Pope John Paul II for almost forty years,
enjoying unique access to both the public
and private man. In A life with Karol,
he provides a close-up glimpse into the
Pope’s life and the critical events of his
papacy.
Dziwisz was sitting next to the Pope during
the assassination attempt in 1981. He
recounts the Pope's reaction to 9/11,
describing his thoughts and feelings on that
day. And the Cardinal’s moving description
of the Pope’s haunting memories of World War
II uncovers the roots of the pontiff’s
intense opposition to George W. Bush’s war
on Iraq.
The two men shared moments of fun and
spontaneity as well. Dziwisz writes about
the times the Pope would slip out of the
Vatican, wearing a Panama hat, to stroll the
streets of Rome, and he describes the
clandestine ski and hiking trips the pair
made to escape the Vatican. His firsthand
account of the Pope’s last years also
reveals that John Paul II considered
resigning. These stories and others lend
added poignancy to Dziwisz’s extraordinary
portrayal of the Pope’s courage and calmness
during his final illness. Hardcover, 272
pages (Item #87987) $24.00
About the Author
CARDINAL STANISLAW DZIWISZ was personal
secretary to Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul
II) in Kraków and in Rome. He was ordained a
priest in 1963, was appointed Archbishop of
Kraków in 2005, and in 2006 was made a
cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI.

Come Be My Light
by Mother Teresa and Brian Kolodiejchuk
This historic work reveals the inner spiritual life of one of the most
beloved and important religious figures in history.
During her lifelong service to the poorest of the poor, Mother Teresa became
an icon of compassion to people of all religions; her extraordinary
contributions to the care of the sick, the dying, and thousands of others
nobody else was prepared to look after has been recognized and acclaimed
throughout the world. Little is known, however, about her own spiritual
heights or her struggles. This collection of her writing and reflections,
almost all of which have never been made public before, sheds light on
Mother Teresa's interior life in a way that reveals the depth and intensity
of her holiness for the first time.
Compiled and presented by Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C., who knew Mother
Teresa for twenty years and is the postulator for her cause for sainthood
and director of the Mother Teresa Center, MOTHER TERESA brings together
letters she wrote to her spiritual advisors over decades. A moving chronicle
of her spiritual journey—including moments, indeed years, of utter
desolation—these letters reveal the secrets she shared only with her closest
confidants. She emerges as a classic mystic whose inner life burned with the
fire of charity and whose heart was tested and purified by an intense trial
of faith, a true dark night of the soul.
Published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of her death, MOTHER TERESA
is an intimate portrait of a woman whose life and work continue to be
admired by millions of people.
“If I ever become a Saint—I will surely be one of “darkness.” I will
continually be absent from Heaven—to lit the light of those in darkness on
earth .”
—Mother Teresa of Calcutta

The Book of Saints & Heroes
The first Christians to visit Europe and the British Isles
met pagans who told tales of fairies, talking beasts, and other
wonderful things. To these marvelous stories, they soon added new
ones about the Christian saints. Some were true, others improbable,
and many simply fantastic. In the ones we include here, you’ll meet
the saint who spent seven Easters on a whale’s back and the amiable
lion who was St. Jerome’s friend. You’ll see St. George fight the
dragon, and you’ll read about the fierce wolf St. Francis of Assisi
converted. But many of these stories have
in them scarcely a wave of the fairy wand. So you’ll also find here
true tales of great saints such as St. Louis of France, St. Vincent
de Paul, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Elizabeth of Hungary — souls
marked by courage, kindness, and piety.
These marvelous legends and exciting
true stories of Christian saints and heroes will provide many hours

My Life
with the Saints
by
James Martin, S.J.
James Martin has led a thoroughly modern life: from a
lukewarm childhood Catholicism, to the Wharton School of Business, to the
executive fast track at General Electric, to the Jesuits, to a media career
in Manhattan. But at every step along the way he has been accompanied by
special friends—the saints of the Catholic Church. These holy men and women
are not just historical figures to him. Martin’s attachment to them is real
and personal. The saints have guided him. He convincingly shows how the
saints can be our friends too.
Martin’s saintly friends come from the whole of Christian history—from St.
Paul to John XXIII—and they include Thérèse of Lisieux, Joan of Arc,
Ignatius Loyola and other beloved figures. They accompany the author on a
pilgrimage that includes stops in a sunlit square of a French town, a quiet
retreat house on a New England beach, the housing projects in inner-city
Chicago, the sprawling slums of Nairobi, and a gorgeous Baroque church in
Rome. As James Martin’s inspiring, witty, and surprising account unfolds, we
see how saints can help us to find our way in the world.

Light in the Dark Ages,
The Friendship of Francis and Clare of Assisi
by
Jon M. Sweeney
The Middle Ages were not so very dark, as the
old textbooks say. As you will discover in this intriguing portrait of the
first Franciscans, we live in dark ages whenever we become
preoccupied with power. In this popular history, Jon Sweeney reveals the
timeless temptations that come with being human---greed, competition, ego,
and selfishness---as well as the many ways that Francis and Clare of Assisi
inspired change and brought light into darkness.
Discover how Francis was first found by God and then
joined by Clare despite the violent objections of her family. Explore a
variety of issues that they faced, including the treatment of lepers in
medieval society, corruption in the Church, and attitudes toward the created
world. You will also learn how Clare's spirituality influenced that of other
prominent women, how St. Francis lost control of his own movement, and why
Francis's body was secretly buried upon his death.
The examples of early Franciscan spirituality challenge
any of us who would follow Christ today. How would we view a young person
today who rejected family for spiritual reasons? Is it possible for men and
women to have deep friendship and remain true to a call to chastity? Is
intentional poverty of any value? Have we sentimentalized family to the
point of ignoring what Jesus taught his disciples on the subject?

Meet Fulton Sheen:
Beloved Preacher and Teacher of the Word
by
Janel
Rodriguez
Fulton Sheen was
a not-to-be-missed radio and television evangelist during the
mid-twentieth century, but his broadcasting career got off to a rocky
start. "I don't know why I invited that man," the host remarked
quietly as Sheen failed to ignite the airwaves during his first radio
address. By the 1950s, however, Bishop Sheen was preaching to millions on
his weekly TV show, Life Is Worth Living, had won an Emmy and
appeared on the cover of Time magazine.
Far more than a media personality, Bishop Sheen was above all a priest
with a single-minded determination to bring people to Christ. Although he
counted the rich and famous among his converts, he was friend and
benefactor to many poor, sick or lonely people and not a few hardened
sinners. He introduced Catholics to the "hour of power," an hour
of prayer daily before the Blessed Sacrament; his own life as an
evangelist, writer, scholar, bishop and fundraiser flowed from this
practice. Bishop Sheen was a "loyal son of the church," John
Paul II told him, and his story is especially relevant in this time of
renewed evangelization. Paperback, 158 pages (Item #84960)

Amazing Grace:
William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery
by Eric Metaxas
Amazing Grace tells the story of the remarkable life of the
British abolitionist William Wilberforce (1759-1833). This accessible
biography chronicles Wilberforce's extraordinary role as a human rights
activist, cultural reformer, and member of Parliament.
At the center of this heroic life was a passionate twenty-year fight
to abolish the British slave trade, a battle Wilberforce won in 1807, as
well as efforts to abolish slavery itself in the British colonies, a
victory achieved just three days before his death in 1833.
Metaxas discovers in this unsung hero a man of whom it can truly be
said: he changed the world. Before Wilberforce, few thought slavery was
wrong. After Wilberforce, most societies in the world came to see it as
a great moral wrong.
To mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave
trade, HarperSanFrancisco and Bristol Bay Productions have joined
together to commemorate the life of William Wilberforce with the
feature-length film Amazing Grace and this companion biography,
which provides a fuller account of the amazing life of this great man
than can be captured on film.
This account of Wilberforce's life will help many become acquainted
with an exceptional man who was a hero to Abraham Lincoln and an
inspiration to the anti-slavery movement in America.

Mother
Angelica
The Remarkable Story of a Nun, Her
Nerve, and a Network of Miracles
by Raymond Arroyo
In 1981, the year after Ted Turner founded CNN, a simple nun using her
entrepreneurial instincts and $200 for seed money, launched what would
become the world’s largest religious media empire in the garage of a
Birmingham, Alabama monastery. Today, EWTN offers twenty-four hours of
English and Spanish television programming reaching 105 million viewers
around the globe. How did a crippled nun achieve so much and reach so
many?
Born Rita Rizzo in Canton, Ohio, in 1923, Mother Angelica was abandoned by
her father and raised in poverty by a mother who suffered suicidal
depressions. Awakened to the power of prayer, she vowed to dedicate her
life to God and become a cloistered nun. She expected to spend her life
hidden from the world. But Rita’s faith compelled her to unlikely
endeavors, accomplishing what the highest echelon of the Catholic Church
could not.
Raymond Arroyo’s engrossing biography traces Mother Angelica’s tortured
rise to success and exposes for the first time the fierce opposition she
faced, inside and outside of her church. It is an inspiring story of
survival and proof that one woman’s faith can move more than mountains.

The Joyful Beggar
A Novel of St. Francis of Assisi
by Louis de Wohl
In this magnificent and stirring novel, Louis de Wohl turns his famed narrative skill to
the story of the soldier and merchant's son who might have been right-hand man to a king
and who became instead the most beloved of all saints. Set against the tempestuous
background of 13th Century Italy and Egypt, here is the magnificent and inspiring story of
Francis Bernardone, the brash, pleasure-loving young officer who was to become
immortalized as St. Francis of Assisi.
The story teems with action, pageantry and intrigue with finely conceived characters-the
beautiful, saintly Clare, Frederick, the hawk-faced King of Sicily and Holy Roman Emperor,
the Sultan Al Kamil, Pope Innocent III. The scene shifts from Assisi, Rome and Sicily to
the deadly sands of Egypt. (Item #90762) $14.95 |

A Pilgrim's Journey
The Autobiography of St. Ignatius of Loyola
by Joseph Tylenda, S.J.
Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a man who saw above and beyond his century, a man of vision
and calm hope, who could step comfortably into our era and the Church of our time and show
us how to draw closer to Christ.
Ignatius' autobiography spans eighteen very important years of this saint's 65-year
life
from his wounding at Pamplona (1521) through his conversion, his university
studies and his journey to Rome in order to place his followers and himself at the
disposal of the Pope. These critical years reveal the incredible transformation and
spiritual growth in the soul of a great saint and the events that helped to bring about
that change in his life.
This classic work merits a long life. Apart from providing a splendid translation of the
saint's original text, Father Tylenda has included an informative commentary which enables
the modern reader to grasp various allusions in the text-and to gain a better view of a
saintly man baring his soul. (Item #90763) $14.95 |

The Defamation of Pius XII
by Ralph McInerny
Eugenio Pacelli, Pius XII, was one of the few unalloyed heroes of World War II. At great
personal risk, he saved some 800,000 Jews from extermination by the Nazis. Jewish refugees
were given asylum in the Vatican, swelling the number of Swiss Guards. No Allied leader
can match his glorious record. Golda Meir lauded Pius XII after the war, and the chief
rabbi of Rome became a Roman Catholic, taking the name of Eugenio in tribute to Eugenio
Pacelli.
Why then has such a man been vilified and all but accused of being responsible for the
Holocaust? This book restores Pius XII to the rank of hero, demolishes the ludicrous
charges against him, and identifies the true target of this infamous calumny: the Church,
the papacy, and the Christian moral teaching which confronts and condemns the Culture of
Death. (Item #90777) $18.95 |

Benedict: What the Rule Can Teach Us Today
by Laura Swan
Nearly fifteen centuries ago, Benedict of Nursia wrote a
rule for Christians who wanted to live, work and pray together in
community. With its core values of contemplation, hospitality, and
simplicity, the rule remains as useful and fresh today as it was when
Benedict created it in Italy those many centuries ago. But the Rule is not
without its difficulties in contemporary practice. Author Laura Swan, a
Benedictine Sister, looks at the Rule with a critical eye, seeking to
unpack those parts that are problematic and to uncover gems that support
the yearnings of today?s seekers. She takes the obstacles that women and
young people find in the Rule, and offers them insights that resonate with
their experience and are still faithful to the challenge of the Rule.
Readers will discover that Benedict?s wisdom can shed much light on their
own lives. By wrestling with the Rule, and hence taking it seriously,
Laura Swan offers readers guidance on many difficult and painful
questions. Paperback. 192 pages. (Item #84156)

Mother Seton and the Sisters of Charity
by Alma Powers-Water
In 1975, Mother Elizabeth Seton was canonized as Americas first native-born Roman
Catholic saint. This Vision Book tells the inspiring true story of the life of Elizabeth
Bayley Seton from her childhood in a distinguished New York family to her becoming a
sister and foundress of an order of nuns.
Born in 1774, Elizabeth Bayley grew up in a well-to-do Protestant family and seemed
destined for a tranquil life. At age 19 she married William Seton and together they had
five children. Tragedy struck when William died of tuberculosis in 1803. Elizabeth learned
that her family fortune was lost as well. She converted to Catholicism at a time when
Catholics were the object of persecutions in the United States. Her family was shocked by
this decision. Elizabeth met Bishop Carroll of Maryland, and he gave her the inspiration
to found the American Sisters of Charity and the first American parochial Catholic school.
In time her order of sisters flourished, and they established more schools, orphanages and
hospitals across the United States. At her early death (46 years old) Mother Setons
congregation numbered twenty-one communities throughout the country. Illustrated (Item

The Soul of a Lion
The Life of Dietrich Von Hildebrand
by Alice von Hildebrand
Dietrich von Hildebrand, widely regarded as one of the great Catholic philosophers of the
20th century, is well-known for his numerous books, but, until this present work, not much
has been known of his remarkable and inspiring life. Written by his wife, Alice, also a
highly respected Catholic thinker, this is a fascinating, moving and, at times, gripping
account of a truly great man of the Church who suffered much for the faith.
Based on a very long letter Dietrich wrote to his wife late in his life, it
tells his story from his glorious youth with a unique intellectual and cultural formation,
his coversion to Catholisism, his great passion for truth and beauty, his extensive
writing on Christian philosophy and theology, and his steadfast, determined opposition to
Nazism that made him a marked man who miraculously escaped execution. A powerful biography
of a relentless fighter against injustice, a devoted son of the Church, a man who had the
soul of a lion. Illustrated. (Item #90811) $14.95 |
